Who We Are

First Christian Church (DOC) is a community of people who have been living and serving in the heart of Rockwood since the mid-1800’s.  We are a congregation striving to live out the witness of Jesus Christ in our world today. We strive to be a welcoming community that offers hospitality to all who seek to grow in faith.  First Christian Church is a congregation that is a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ,) a Christian tradition that began on the American frontier in the 1800’s. Today, we are united with the more than 4,000 Disciple of Christ congregations in the United States.  Our vision as a church is inspired from Micah 6:8.  We seek to be a faithful, growing church that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice.  That means life transforming worship is central to who we are as we gather each week at the Communion table.  We believe that faith is a journey and involves personal exploration and study over a lifetime.  We also believe that the life of faith calls us to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in our world today.  We work to take care of all of God’s children and are likely to find members of our church at the local food pantry, serving meals at the “Love Kitchen” or down in the Gulf working to rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to work cooperatively with other Christians in Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in carrying out the mission of the church and in order to testify to the unity of Christ’s Church.  This congregation, in spirit of ecumenicity embraced by the Disciples of Christ, shall work cooperatively with other churches.

Statement of purpose: Our purpose is to be a church founded on New Testament principles, proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ through all areas of its life and work, witnessing in all situations to the grace of God in Jesus Christ, thereby seeking in all people a response in faith and commitment to God.
